Leukemia (Blood Cancer)

Leukemia can be defined as a cancer of blood cells and is generally known as Blood Cancer.
In this very article i will be enlightening you on the Causes, Types, Symptoms, Diagnosis and Treatments.
                  Causes
Research has made us to know that there is no known cause of leukemia, but risk factors of it are radiation exposure and exposure to benzene.
                  Types
There are four major types of leukemia which are acute lymphocytic, chronic lymphocytic, acute myeloid and chronic myeloid leukemia.
Acute lymphocytic: This can be found mostly in children, in this type immature lymphoid cells grow rapidly in the blood.
N.B: it can also affect adults.
Acute myeloid: This is the rapid growth of myeloid cells and it affects both young and old.
Chronic lymphocytic: This involves slow-glowing of cancer of lymphoid cells that normally affects people that is over the age of 55yrs.
Chronic myeloid: This only affects adults.
Let's take a look at some symptoms of this Ailment
*weight loss
*frequent infections
*pain in the bones or joints
*fevers
*fatigue
*bleeding and bruising easily
*discomfort or swelling in the abdomen
*swollen lymph nodes

               Diagnosis
Physical exams: This involves looking at the physical signs of leukemia ie pale skin from anaemia, swelling of your lymph nodes and enlargement of your liver and spleen.
Blood tests: Examining the samples of your blood can help your doctor ascertain if you have abnormal levels of white blood cells or platelets which may suggest leukemia.
Bone marrow test: Your doctor may recommend a procedure to remove a sample of your bone marrow from your hipbone which is removed with a long thin needle. This very sample is sent to the laboratory for testing in order to reveal the leukemia cells.
Treatment(source: www.webmd.com)
For acute lymphocytic: The immediate goal of treatment is remission. The patient undergoes chemotherapy in a hospital and stays in a private room to reduce the chance of infection. Since acute leukemia patients have extremely low counts of healthy blood cells, they are given blood platelet transfusions to help prevent or stop bleeding. They are also given antibiotics to prevent infections.
For Acute Myeloid: They may require an allogeneic stem cell transplant. This requires a willing donor with compatible tissue type and genetic characteristics.
For Chronic Lymphocytic: A form of leukemia that usually affects older person, which progresses slowly. With that been said treatment is not immediate.
For Chronic Myeloid: Oral chemotherapy can effectively control it's symptoms for several years. In the past, most cases of chronic myeloid leukemia eventually advanced to an acute phase despite treatment, so doctors advised bone marrow transplantation during the chronic phase. Allogeneic stem cell transplantation for chronic myeloid leukemia is still a treatment option for disease resistance to treatment or for persons whose disease is in the acute phase.
